This particular movement I first had the opportunity to play on violin back in high school. Even at that time, I found the perpetual push of the melodic line intoxicating, and a few years later in re-entered my ear as a transcription for saxophone quartet. Beethoven masterfully uses the colors of the string quartet to expand on a simple, scalar melodic theme. As arranger, Beethoven has thankfully done most (if not all!) of the heavy lifting, save for some notational changes from string vernacular to wind vernacular, as well register changes where needed.
